Singin' the Standards Lesson Suggestions

Synonym, Antonym, Homonym Chant (Track 11)

This song is quite clear so my suggestions will be brief.

When my students sing this song, they normally sit and pound their legs twice on the down beat and clap on the up beat (boom-boom cha, boom-boom cha). When the chant says the following, we stop pounding and clapping and add hand motions.

Like lean (thumb and index paint a vertical stripe) and thin (same as lean only using the other hand), smile (paint a happy face next to your lips with index fingers) and grin (same as smile).

Like happy (point up by cheeks) and sad (point down by cheeks), good (two thumbs up) and bad (two thumbs down).

Like write (fake write on your palm) and right (stick out your right hand to the right), here (cup hands around ears) and here (point two index fingers down at your feet).

Give your students many frequent but short quizzes asking for synonyms, antonyms and homonyms of a stated word i.e. "Write a synonym for difficult."
