Learning
Styles Training for Sunday School Teachers
(35:05)
Training session
for Sunday School teachers. All students do not learn in the same manner.
In fact, the predominant method for instructing students in church is
probably the least effective: lecture. In this high involvement
in-service, New Mexico teachers learn practical ways to meet the different
learning styles of their students.

Is "is" a
verb? High Involvement Feedback
(0:29)
You never REALLY
know what students are thinking and how much they understand until you
have them converse. In this video, you will see a few students trying to
reach consensus on their answer to a question about the verb "is." Because
of this conversation, I was able to modify my lessons to clarify their
misunderstanding.

Reaching
Consensus on a Reading Assignment
(5:08)
In this powerful
video, you will see a small group of 5th graders reaching consensus on
some comprehension questions. Notice how they dig through the text to
support their answers. They were never instructed to do this, but because
of the learning activity "reaching
consensus," they automatically skimmed the passage on their own. Two
of these students are English language learners.
The last
half of the video is an interview with the students on the benefits of
this teaching method. You'll love hearing these 5th graders insights.

Teacher as
Coach (0:23)
Student feedback
is an amazing motivator. I've learned to make note taking and verbal
coaching a regular part of my day. As students work, I take notes on my
clipboard (primarily positive.) At the end of the independent activity, I
pull the students together to tell them what I saw. I use student names
when I have something uplifting to share. If I need to make constructive
criticisms, I avoid identifying students and make my comments more
general, "Some students..." Watch as my student teacher uses student
feedback to shape desirable behaviors.
