English Language Learners ~ Benefits of Reaching Consensus (0:39)

When you involve students in conversing with each other over their work, the English Language Learners benefit greatly as they practice their English in a context that is based on the current unit of study. Here you will see two ELL students reaching consensus on a reading comprehension assignment.

Writing Lesson with a Twist  (0:26)

When kids write, it's best to give them an authentic audience to write for rather than just for the teacher to receive a grade. My third graders were assigned the task of writing directions on how to get from the classroom to the front office of the school. They were told to be very literal and tested their rough drafts with a partner to see if they worked. The culminating event of this writing assignment was to have our principal, Mr. Reyes, see if the directions would help him get from our room back to the office. In this video, you will see him trying one students directions. Will he make it to the front office? Watch and see.

Jason Leads a Peer Discussion (0:51)

When you put kids in charge, they get so much more out of your teaching! Here Jason leads a critical thinking discussion on a reading assignment. I put Jason in charge of leading students in an orderly discussion where each person was involved and had their ideas heard. As you can see, he exhibits tremendous leadership skills. However, if I am always the leader in class, I would never discover this nor would Jason have the opportunity to develop these skills.

Teacher Observation (1:14)

In the following video short, you will observe Mrs. Williams, my student teacher, engaging students in a feedback session after they spent time doing the assignment, AND reaching consensus. Notice the high level of involvement as students are expected to participate chorally in answering questions. This video makes a great teaching training tool at the college level.
